POLLUTION OF AIR ( PART 3)
1) CARBON MONOXIDE
*It
is a colourless, tasteless & odourless gas.
*It
is produced as a result of incomplete combustion of carbon
*It
is highly poisonous to humans as it blocks the delivery of oxygen to the organs
& tissues
*It
binds haemoglobin in blood and forms CARBOXYHAEMOGLOBIN
*When
the percentage of Carboxyhaemoglobin increases in blood, the oxygen carrying
capacity of blood is greatly reduced
*This
is called CARBON with MONOXIDE poisoning
*In
such situations, a person may suffer from HEADACHES,BLURRED VISION,
DIZZINESS,NAUSEA, CONFUSION, NERVOUSNESS, SHORT OF BREATH, LOSS OF
CONSCIOUSNESS & CHEST PAIN DUE TO HEART ATTACK
*If
this gas is inhaled in high amount, this may also lead to death
*This
is one of the reason people are advised not to smoke
2) OXIDES OF SULPHUR
*Sulphur
dioxide is poisonous for both plants & animals
*Even
a very low concentration of this gas may cause respiratory diseases like
ASTHMA, BRONCHITIS, EMPHYSEMA in human beings
*It
also causes irritation to the eyes resulting in tears & redness
*If
plants are exposed to a high concentration of sulphur dioxide, it leads to
stiffness of flower buds to which the buds eventually fall
SUSPENDED PARTICLE MATTERS...
ØIt
is another common air pollutant
ØParticulate
pollutants are the minute solid particles or liquid droplets in air
ØMinute
living organisms like BACTERIA, FUNGI, MOULDS,ALGAE that are dispersed in the
atmosphere are some examples of particulate matter
ØParticulate
pollutants from non-living sources include fine cement & ash particle from
FACTORIES, DUST, MIST & SMOKE
ØHuman
being are allergic to some fungi found in air.
ØParticulate
pollutants may cause difficulty in breathing, aggravate heart & lung
diseases & cause chronic bronchitis or reduced lung function in children
